Commissioner warns over record high greenhouse gas emissions in Cyprus

Greenhouse gas emissions in Cyprus have reached record high levels Environment Commissioner Antonia Theodosiou said on Thursday, noting that the sector of electricity production is the one with the largest contribution to emissions on the island.

Speaking during an event orgnized by Athienou town hall in the district of Larnaka, the Commissioner referred to findings of the Cyprus Institute over a period of five years for carbon dioxide (CO₂) and methane (CH₄). Theodosiou said that these figures call for immediate action and the transition to a more sustainable energy and production model.

Emissions come also from the transport sector, th econstruction sector (such as cement production), waste management, as well as from livestock farming, agriculture, and land use, she said.

She also referred to projects included in the National Energy and Climate Plan for renewable energy sources (RES) and community energy autonomy, smart and green infrastructure to improve the built environment, and the circular economy and sustainable waste management.

Theodosiou also noted that green transition and climate neutrality is a key priority for her office and explained that all initiatives are based on consultation with the communities and others involved.
